Makana Coffee Roasters Tosabori Store is a cozy coffee shop tucked into the Nishi Ward area of Osaka, offering a calm retreat from the city’s busy pace. It’s the kind of place where locals drop in during mid-morning or late afternoon for a carefully brewed cup of coffee paired with a light, homemade treat. The cafe’s atmosphere is casual and quietly focused, making it easy to settle down with a laptop or a book, or simply enjoy some downtime.

Their specialty is in small batch roasting with a clear passion for highlighting distinct coffee flavors. Their cold brew — made from Ethiopian beans — has a sweetness and depth that challenges the usual watery or bitter expectations of iced coffee, and many visitors find themselves coming back for this standout offering alone. The water-drip cold brew serves as a base for other creative drinks like the iced café au lait and the espresso tonic, the latter bringing a refreshing citrus twist with lime, which coffee lovers say grows on you after a few sips.

Beyond coffee, their selection of freshly baked cakes and sweets provides a nice balance for those wanting something to nibble alongside their drink. Seasonal options like fig tart or pumpkin-based cheesecakes draw fans who appreciate homemade, less conventional flavors. The mini muffins also get frequent nods for being perfectly sized bites — not too sweet, just right for a quick, satisfying snack.

The staff here are known to be approachable and helpful, with at least some English capability, which makes exploring the menu’s flavor profiles more accessible for non-Japanese speakers. This friendly approach encourages a relaxed experience whether you’re a local easing into your morning ritual or a traveler researching different coffee origins and roast styles.

The space itself fits well into the Tosabori neighborhood, not too loud or crowded, giving a quiet corner away from Osaka’s typical hustle. It’s a great spot for those who want to taste carefully curated coffee without the flashy vibe some trendy cafés bring, and also serves as a meaningful local stop for those who appreciate craftsmanship in every cup.

My wife loved the (i think vegan) pumpkin basque cheesecake. Says it was the best ever! The staff there knew English so she was nice and helpful. Would visit again if we have the opportunity.

Great variety of coffee. “Uganda” hot coffee with a tiramisu roll was superb.

One of the staff members spoke excellent English, which made it much easier for me to understand the flavor profiles of the beans I was interested in. She was genuinely helpful & took the time to recommend options based on my preferences. I also tried their filter coffee it was absolutely delicious. The prices for the beans were very reasonable compared to other roasters, & the overall atmosphere of the place was both cool and charming. I truly enjoyed my visit and was happy to be there.

This place offers a large selection of muffins, baked goods, and coffee. I tried three chocolate-based muffins and an iced mocha. The iced mocha was great—better than average—though it did have slightly too much milk for my taste. The coffee was smooth and not bitter, which I really enjoyed. The muffins were interesting. They weren’t very sweet and were a bit bland, but still not bad. I’d recommend trying other flavors instead of the chocolate, but I stuck with the chocolate because I’m a picky eater. I imagine the other muffins are more flavorful. I wouldn’t say it’s a place to go out of your way for, but if you’re nearby, I’d recommend it for coffee and a light snack. The space is small, so it’s not ideal for sitting down for a long time unless it’s not too busy. The staff was very kind to me as a foreigner, and there’s an English menu. She even let me in a few minutes before opening since I was waiting outside. They also had personal space heaters by the tables, which was a nice touch. The bathroom was clean, well-maintained, and had paper towels.
